Parish Council Elections

Submitted on 29 April 2019 by WPC Clerk

This year, there will be no Parish Council Elections on 2nd May, because there are thirteen seats available and only 10 candidates standing. We are now looking to co-opt two further Councillors – but what is co-option?

Co-option is a means of appointing a Parish Councillor when no election has been called or if a vacancy arises during the 4 year term. At election time, the Council is entitled to co-opt Councillors without further advertising for up to thirty-five days after the election date of 2nd May.

This year, there are three seats available in the parish, one in Mardens Hill ward (St Johns and surrounding area) and two in Groombridge ward (including Blackham and Withyham, which are both currently under-represented).

Parish Councils are the most local part of our democratic system and are closest to the public. Why don’t you join your local parish council and see what difference you can make to your local community? If you are interested in being co-opted please get in touch with Debbie Siddle, Parish Clerk, on 01892 864557.
